The Giant Carp Spawning In Lakeside Park Right Now

Every year around this time, one of my favorite things to see at Lakeside Park is the giant carp spawning in the river channels.

Every year around this time, one of my favorite things to see at Lakeside Park is the giant carp spawning in the river channels. If you’ve never seen it before, it’s honestly wild watching these huge fish thrash around in the shallow water, especially early in the morning or near sunset. I always end up stopping for a few minutes just to watch because it’s one of those simple things that reminds you how alive the Winnebago system really is this time of year. It’s become one of those signs that summer in Fond du Lac is right around the corner.

Carp spawning usually starts in Wisconsin once the water temperatures climb into roughly the low to mid 60s, which is why late May and early June are when people around Lakeside start noticing all the activity. During spawning, the females release eggs into shallow grassy areas while multiple males chase behind them fertilizing the eggs. That’s why the water gets so chaotic looking, with fish splashing, rolling, and slamming around near shorelines and river edges.

A lot of the carp people are seeing right now are massive too. Common carp in the Winnebago system can easily reach 15 to 30 pounds, and some grow even larger over time. They move into the shallow channels and calmer waters because it gives their eggs a better chance of surviving in warmer water protected from stronger currents.

Even though carp aren’t native to Wisconsin, they’ve been part of the area for generations, and their spawning season has honestly become part of the spring atmosphere around Fond du Lac. If you take a walk through Lakeside Park this time of year, there’s a good chance you’ll hear the splashing before you even see the fish. It’s one of those random local things that never really gets old.
