Accessibility
I Love FDL is for everyone in Fond du Lac, which means it has to work for people using screen readers, keyboards, magnification, voice control, or just a phone in bright sunlight. This page says where we are honestly — including the parts that aren’t good enough yet.
What we aim for
We work toward WCAG 2.1 Level AA, the standard most widely used for public websites.
We have not had a formal accessibility audit, so we don’t claim to meet that standard — we’re telling you what we’re aiming at, not certifying that we got there. When an audit happens, this page will say what it found.
What’s in place
- A “skip to main content” link as the first item on every page, so keyboard users don’t tab through the whole header to reach an article.
- Interactive things are real buttons and links rather than clickable boxes, so they respond to Enter and Space and announce themselves correctly.
- Images that carry meaning have text alternatives; images that are purely decorative are marked so screen readers skip them instead of reading out filenames.
- Dialogs close with Esc as well as the × button.
- Passport stamps can be collected by typing a 6-digit PIN instead of scanning a QR code — useful if a camera isn’t usable for you, for any reason.
Known barriers
These are real and we’d rather say so than let you find them one at a time:
- The event maps are difficult without a pointer. Panning, zooming and placing a pin all assume a mouse or touch. Everything the map shows is also in the event list and the written location, and the submission form accepts a typed address — but the map itself is not keyboard-friendly.
- Colour contrast hasn’t been checked systematically. Some smaller grey text, particularly secondary lines on cards, is likely below the AA threshold.
- No formal screen-reader testing. We’ve built to the conventions, but nobody has walked the site end-to-end with NVDA, JAWS or VoiceOver.
- Some third-party content is outside our control— payment pages are hosted by Stripe, and photos and descriptions are written by local businesses.
Tell us about a barrier
If something here doesn’t work for you, we want to know — including the small things, and including “this was annoying” rather than only “this was impossible.”
Email info@ilovefdl.com with “Accessibility” in the subject, or use the contact form. Telling us the page and what you were trying to do helps most; the assistive technology and browser you use helps if you know it.
We aim to reply within five business days. If something blocks you from doing a thing this site exists for — buying from a local shop, finding an event, claiming a prize — say so and we’ll help you get it done while we fix the underlying problem.
