Mike Owens Has Been Making a Difference for 35 Years

For 35 years, Mike Owens has been changing lives through Big Brothers Big Sisters of America, building lifelong friendships with the young people he's mentored, some lasting long enough for him to officiate their weddings. His story is a powerful reminder of the impact one caring mentor can have, especially as local children continue to wait for volunteers to step forward.

When I asked Mike Owens about his time with Big Brothers Big Sisters, I was blown away by his dedication. This year Iike his 35th year with the organization after getting involved back in 1991, and he was just matched with another Little last week. Even more impressive, he still stays in touch with many of the kids he’s mentored over the years. Some relationships have lasted so long that he’s even officiated the weddings of two former Littles. It’s amazing to see how a few hours spent with a young person can turn into a lifelong friendship.

Mike told me his passion for giving back started with his family. His grandfather and father were both active in their communities, and that inspired him to do the same. Over the years, he and his Littles spent time doing all kinds of fun activities like fishing, shooting hoops at the YMCA, working out at Planet Fitness, visiting Do It All Sports, and, of course, ending the day with a good meal together. Every child he has mentored has gone on to become a successful adult in their own community, and that’s something Mike is incredibly proud of.

Mike grew up in Waukesha before moving to Fond du Lac in 2000. He said Fond du Lac reminds him a lot of the Waukesha he remembers from the 1960s and 70s, with its beautiful lake, parks, and countryside just minutes away. I thought that was pretty cool because it’s exactly why so many of us love living here too.

Mike also wanted me to share one important message with everyone. Big Brothers Big Sisters is in desperate need of volunteers. Right now, some kids are waiting one to two years to be matched with a mentor. If you’ve ever thought about getting involved, Mike’s story shows just how much of a difference one person can make. 35 years later, he’s still changing lives, and that’s what being a Homegrown Hero is all about.
