If you’ve ever driven down Scott Street, you’ve probably noticed The Surplus Army Navy Store that legendary treasure-trove packed wall to wall with boots, jackets, and more gear than you could ever need. It’s been a staple in Fondy since the 1950s, long before the current owner Gary Graves ever stepped behind the counter. Today you’ll find it right where it’s always been; 80 W Scott St a locally loved, family run shop where the shelves feel like a mix between a military base and an outdoor adventure stash.
Gary himself was born in 1956, grew up right here in Fond du Lac, graduated from Goodrich High School, and later attended UW-Oshkosh. In 1982, he joined the family business, and he’s been keeping the tradition alive ever since. You can tell he loves what he does. The store has this no-nonsense vibe… the kind of place where the history is real, the stories are real, and the gear has actually seen things.
When you walk inside, you’ll find exactly what Wisconsin living calls for; hunting and camping gear, warm socks, hats, and gloves, winter and work boots, plus military gear and memorabilia that connects generations of service and outdoor grit. And because it’s a true surplus shop, the selection changes constantly. One day it’s ammo cans and tactical backpacks, the next day it’s cold weather coats or unit patches from who-knows-where. You never know what find will jump out at you… and that’s kind of the fun.
The best part? Gary keeps prices fair. His philosophy is basically “Always a good deal on quality goods.” No gimmicks. Just a hardworking Fondy guy running a long-standing local business that keeps our community geared up for hunting season, snow season, job sites, and everything in between. The Surplus Army Navy Store has been part of our city’s story for more than 70 years… and thanks to Gary, it’s still going strong and still very much a Fond du Lac original.
