From the River to the Lighthouse: Kayaking Lakeside Park

Kayaking at Lakeside Park is one of those things I end up doing without even planning it. You pull up to the launch on Harbor View Drive, toss the kayak in, and you’re on the water in like a minute.

Kayaking at Lakeside Park is one of those things I end up doing without even planning it. You pull up to the launch on Harbor View Drive, toss the kayak in, and you’re on the water in like a minute. No dragging it half a mile, no overthinking it. It’s one of the easiest spots in Fondy to just get out and go.

I usually start heading through the river, and that part never gets old. It’s chill, just enough current to move you along, and then you hit the big hole. That’s always the spot. It opens up, you see other people out there, some fishing, some just hanging on the docks by their boats. Half the time I end up slowing down there without even realizing it.

Then if you keep going, you can push out toward Lake Winnebago by the lighthouse, and that’s where it changes. You go from that tight river feel to just wide open water. Some days it’s calm and perfect, other days you feel it a little more. Either way, I’ll usually sit out there for a bit before heading back. It’s simple, but it’s one of those things that makes you realize how nice it actually is around here once you get out and do it.
