Family Dollar at 798 S. Main Street in Fond du Lac is one of those stores that can be surprisingly useful when you're trying to stretch your household budget.

With the cost of just about everything continuing to climb, finding ways to save a few dollars here and there can really add up. While a discount store isn't necessarily the place to buy everything on your shopping list, it can be a great resource for many of the everyday items we all need.

For us, the South Main Street Family Dollar is especially convenient because it's close to home. Instead of making a trip across town for a few things, we can make a quick stop and often find what we're looking for.

And recently, I was pleasantly surprised by the Halloween decorations.

I stopped in looking for some Halloween décor and honestly wasn't expecting a huge selection. I was wrong. There was a surprisingly good variety of Halloween decorations and seasonal items. Whether you're looking for something to add a little Halloween spirit to the house, decorate for a party, or simply pick up a few fun seasonal items, it's worth taking a look before spending more somewhere else.

One thing I've learned about stores like Family Dollar is that you don't always know what you're going to find until you walk through the aisles.

My recent Halloween shopping trip was a good reminder of that. I went in expecting a limited selection and came away impressed with what they had available.

And Halloween is just the beginning. Before long, the seasonal merchandise will transition toward Thanksgiving and Christmas, followed by winter items, Valentine's Day, Easter and the other holidays throughout the year.

I'm certainly not saying that Family Dollar will always have the lowest price on every item. It's always smart to compare prices, particularly when you're buying larger quantities.

But for convenience, everyday necessities and seasonal items, having a discount store nearby can be a real benefit.

The South Main Street location is at 798 S. Main Street in Fond du Lac, and Family Dollar currently lists its hours as 8 a.m. to 10 p.m. daily.

For us, the biggest advantage is simple: it's close, it's convenient, and you never know what you might find.

So if you're trying to keep household expenses under control, don't overlook the local discount stores. You might be surprised at what you can find—and, like me, you might walk in looking for one thing and discover something you weren't expecting.
