If you’ve been down by Lakeside Park lately, you may have noticed the signs talking about the lighthouse being painted by Spies Painting Inc.. I saw it today and honestly thought it was pretty cool seeing a longtime local company tied to one of the most recognizable landmarks in Fond du Lac. The lighthouse has been part of the city since 1933, and for a lot of us, it’s definitely a place that makes Fondy stand out whenever you see it along the lakefront.

Spies Painting has actually been around for generations. They’re a family-owned company that’s been operating in the Fond du Lac area since the 1930s and specialize more in large commercial and industrial painting projects than your typical residential painting jobs. They do everything from industrial coatings and sandblasting to epoxy floors, equipment restoration, and commercial painting work throughout the area.

One thing that was cool about seeing the sign is that my buddy Deric works for them. Over the years working at Mercury Marine, I’ve also seen Spies crews inside the plant doing different jobs and projects around the facility. It’s one of those companies you don’t always think about day to day, but once you notice it, you realize how many places around Fond du Lac they’ve actually had a hand in working on.

It’s great to see a longtime Fond du Lac company helping maintain one of the city’s biggest symbols. The Lakeside lighthouse is probably one of the most photographed spots in town, especially during summer and the holidays, and keeping it looking sharp helps preserve a little piece of Fond du Lac history for the next generation too.
