The Story Behind Fond du Lac Beer Company’s Pier Vanilla Porter
by Shane Michael · 8/1/2026

Fond du Lac Beer Company's Pier Vanilla Porter pays tribute to early settlers Edward and Colwert Pier while serving up a smooth, chocolatey porter with hints of vanilla. It's a unique way to experience local history—one pint at a time.
One of the things I enjoy most about Fond du Lac Beer Company is that there’s usually a story behind what ends up in your glass. Their Pier Vanilla Porter is a great example. I haven’t had the chance to try this one yet, but I love the history behind it and the way it honors some of the people who helped build Fond du Lac into what it is today.
The beer is named after Edward and Colwert Pier, two of Fond du Lac County’s earliest settlers. In 1836, the brothers first made their way to the area, crossing the frozen waters of Lake Winnebago during a dangerous journey. Edward returned the following spring, just after Colwert became the county’s first permanent settler. On April 27, 1837, the brothers planted Fond du Lac County’s first wheat, oats, and peas. Edward would later become a respected businessman, public servant, and someone remembered for giving back to the community. It’s pretty cool to see a local brewery keep that history alive in a way people can enjoy.
Even if you’re not usually a fan of dark beers, this one might surprise you. Fond du Lac Beer Company describes the porter as exceptionally smooth, with a chocolatey roasted flavor and soft hints of vanilla. It’s become a customer favorite thanks to its mild bitterness, rich flavor, and smooth finish. Whether you’re stopping in to try the Pier Vanilla Porter or just looking for a great local place to relax, Fond du Lac Beer Company continues to be one of those businesses that does a great job celebrating the community’s past while creating something people can enjoy today.
