Finding Balance on the Eisenbahn: A Trail Into Fall

Explore the 25-mile Eisenbahn State Trail this fall, where wooded paths, open countryside and changing seasons create space to move, reconnect with nature and find a little balance along the way.

Stretching 25 miles from Eden to West Bend, the Eisenbahn State Trail offers a way to experience our corner of Wisconsin at a slower pace. Nearly 12 miles travel through Fond du Lac County, beginning at Eden Community Park and continuing through Campbellsport before crossing into Washington County and eventually reaching West Bend. The relatively level trail follows a former railroad corridor and is primarily surfaced with crushed limestone, making it accessible for walking, running and biking. Even its name holds a piece of that history. Eisenbahn is German for “railroad,” a fitting reminder of what once traveled this route.

As the landscape begins its transition into fall, the Eisenbahn offers something a little different from walking around a neighborhood or exercising indoors. The trail passes through small communities, wooded stretches and open Wisconsin countryside, giving us the opportunity to watch the season change as we move through it. Cooler air, changing leaves, wildlife and the sound of our feet against the trail naturally bring our attention into the environment around us. You can travel for miles or simply walk for twenty minutes and turn around. There is no particular destination required to experience it.

That time outside can support more than our physical health. Research examining exposure to natural environments has found associations with reduced stress and improved mental well-being. Walking adds another layer. There is a rhythm that begins to happen between our breath, our bodies and our surroundings. Fall gives us even more to notice: the temperature against our skin, leaves shifting overhead, the changing colors and sounds beneath our feet. In a world where so much of our attention is pulled toward screens, schedules and what comes next, being outdoors gives our senses something happening right here to return to.

Perhaps that is what makes the Eisenbahn such a fitting place to find a little balance this fall. A corridor once created to move trains through Wisconsin now gives us space to move ourselves. The northern trailhead can be accessed at Eden Community Park, with another convenient access point and parking at Fireman’s Park in Campbellsport. From there, the trail continues south through Kewaskum and into West Bend. The Eisenbahn is open year-round and does not require a state trail pass. Whether you walk, run, bike or simply head out to see the changing leaves, you do not have to travel far to create a little more space between yourself and the noise of everyday life.
